Your cat ignores new toys for one of four fixable reasons: the toy is the wrong prey type, it is not moving like prey, it has been left out so long it became furniture, or your cat is simply overwhelmed by too many options at once. Is the toy the wrong prey type?
Every cat has a prey preference: some are bird cats who go airborne for feathers, some are mouse cats who want ground prey to stalk, some are bug cats who lose their minds over small erratic things. Is it moving like prey?
A toy lying still is scenery. Prey flees, hides, freezes, and panics, and it never charges the cat or dances in its face. Drag the toy away in short bursts, hide it behind a cushion with a tip showing, freeze it mid-run. The freeze is usually what flips the switch. If you have been waving the toy at your cat, that is the whole problem right there.
Has the toy become furniture?
Toys left out every day stop registering as prey within a week. The fix costs nothing: pick up all the toys, hide most of them, and rotate two or three back out every few days. A five-day-old toy reappearing after a week in a drawer is a brand new kill waiting to happen.
When should I actually worry?
If a cat who used to play stops playing entirely, that is not a toy problem, it is a vet visit. Sudden loss of interest in play can signal pain or illness. New toys being snubbed is normal cat behavior; all play stopping is not.
